We are changing up the format a little this week. We will now jump right into diabetes and keto and leave the journey further down.
This week we talk about doctors, results, more weight loss for Pete and more!
Volume 2 Number 5
My fight to reverse diabetes continues on. My diabetes is very stubborn and has been with me for about 15 years and has made it clear that it is not leaving without a fight.
This week I had some huge successes again. I also had a really weird reading one morning that I simply can’t explain.
I went a couple of days this week with either taking no insulin or taking just 20 units over 48 hours. Now I used to take 300 units a day. So on two days that would equal 600 units. So you can see where 20 units over the two days is a massive win.
People often ask me how often I measure my blood sugar. I measure mine, at this point, first thing in the morning, just before lunch and then again before bed. I don’t measure at dinner because I come home and work out then eat right away.
Over the years, I have found that my glucose rises after I workout. So I don’t measure then. I just don’t feel I can get an accurate result and then I go right into dinner. So I just wait til a couple of hours after before bed.
At this point, everything is a judgement call when it comes to insulin. I keep my pills steady but I ebb and flow insulin based on where I am at before bed.
By the way, with all I am doing right, I still had a 200 reading one morning right out of the blue. It adjust down to 89 by lunch with just 20 units of insulin so go figure?
Please understand though, it wasn’t always like this. When I first got diabetes I would only do exactly what my doc told me to do. We were completely in lockstep. I would go often while we were adjusting my plan.
At this point now, my doc trusts me with my own adjustments. We keep in touch via email and I go in every three months to check on my blood and readings. But I have the freedom to make adjustments based upon what I am doing.
And what I am doing is kicking diabetes in the teeth.
So how are you doing? Remember, I started this with only pills. As mine continued to get worse, I had to throw in the insulin and that is where I started gaining weight. And then I continued to gain after that. This led me to the point of changing my life last year.
Let me stop here for a minute and let you know that you have to always be consulting with your doctor. Remember, I am not a doctor. What I write about is stuff that works for me. Your body might be completely different.
But with that said, make sure your doc is dialed in. There are a lot of doctors out there who will simply prescribe you insulin and not treat your diabetes but just your glucose levels.
At the start of my diagnosis, I was only on pills. I thought that the pills would take care of it but they didn’t and I should have paid more attention.
If you are on the pills now, this is your best chance to try and reverse this. Do not wait under any circumstances. Start right now but looking at your carbs and sugars. This is your fastest fix.
As I said last week, buckle up because you can reverse your Type 2 and you are going to beat type 2 diabetes!
As I continue along my journey, I continue to make adjustments to what I am doing. Lately I have been combining a lot of fasting with my keto routine.
As always I stay at 20 net carbs. Actually now I am having way less than that. At one point I crept up about seven pounds and last week I lost all that. In the past, before I started fasting, I would sometimes creep into the 25-net-carb range. That is no longer the case.
But, the danger of fasting for 20 hours is that you want to gorge after you are done. The key is to ease back into it. Don’t got crazy and start swallowing everything or you will erase your results.
I start easing back in with pork rinds and beef jerky. For the record, this is about two net carbs in total. No science behind it by the way, I have a 90-minute commute so I have that in the car. Super simple explanation but it works.
I have been trying to work more bone broth into my meals. It is filling, I like the taste and there are no carbs in it. On my fasting days, I have that for lunch and this works really well.
One thing you have to be careful of are the little extras. I am talking about keto cookies, muffins, breads etc. I think you need to make this way of living work for you but be careful not to get trapped into a bad meal.
At the end of the day, your keto venture is probably for one of two things. Either you are trying to lose weight or beat diabetes. It works for both. Just remember your purpose the next time you stare down the wrong end of a pizza. You can do this. Just take a breath and remember your purpose.
Hopefully you are taking my adventures and using them for your journey as well. My whole point of doing this was to present what I am doing and hopefully others will be able to take from that. I am not a doctor and I advise you check with your’s. I am just saying what works for me.
ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!
Another good week for me. I saw my weight drop, things are getting way easier with my routine. My energy level is through the roof. My plan is working.
There are a lot of things that I am noticing as this moves along. Sometimes the scale doesn’t tell the story. Sometimes the story just comes to you.
For example, I look at my clothing. I see how my pants are way too big. I recognize that I am swimming in my shirts. These are some of the huge wins that are coming my way.
But with that said, I want more.
With my journey I really make sure that I focus on exercise as well. I have said all along that you don’t have to belong to a big-time gym to get results. Just a walk around the block is a win in some cases.
In my case it is online yoga. I can’t wait to get back to the gym but until I get a shot, there is simply no way. So I am doing DDP Yoga.
My routine is simple. . . I do one routine until my fitness level starts to stagnate then I move up to the next one. This has worked well for me. I want to be challenged when working out.
To start the week I am moving my workout up a level. I expect this coming week to be a big one for me. I am looking for weight loss and gains. We will find out next week if either happened.
For those of you who don’t know, I wanted to prove this wasn’t a fluke so I started helping another ex pro wrestler with his journey. His name is Pete and he is located in Indiana. He lives in an assistance-living facility so it isn’t easy for him. Since then, a couple of other wrestlers and fighters have joined in. As always, consult with a doctor before doing any sort of health journey.
Besides Pete, I am also getting another former pro wrestler going, his name is Joe and a former fighter, Bryen, as he recovers from hip replacement and works on getting back in shape.
Outstanding week for Pete. He dropped more pounds and his steps came up. I knew he would have some success on the scales as he has been eating really clean. He has put a lot of effort into it and it is paying off. I am proud to announce that Pete is now down 61 pounds! He is crushing it.
With the momentum Pete is building, his new focus is to get his steps up. He is slowly creeping from 2,000 a day and aiming at 3,000. In the past, Pete has been up over 12,000 steps in a day so we know the he can do this. It is now a mental battle for him to just simply do it.
Of the people I am helping, Pete and I have the most interaction. We speak daily about health and this is really working. I know he is going to blow past the 100-pound mark in no time. He is a huge success story.
Joe had a stagnant week. He didn’t drop anything and is going to weigh on Monday. If he doesn’t drop anything by Monday I am going to suggest a couple of days of fasting for him. I think this will jumpstart him.
Bryen didn’t check in this week. I am assuming he got busy. However, I have seen this before, it might be that he got no progress for the week. I have people do that and disappear because they feel bad. This should not be the case as it happens.
There are a lot of reasons that somebody doesn’t move the scale at the start of the journey. Sometimes they just fall off for some reason for a couple of days. Sometimes they just need to make an adjustment. But it is not unusual for them to disappear.
This week I will follow up with Bryen and get to the bottom of what’s up.
Also, I may be helping my first young lady out. She is in the entertainment business so this should be interesting and I am sure it will be a blast as she is a real character. More on that later.
Three Keto Meal Hacks
This week we are going to talk about snacks. More specifically pork rinds. These things have zero carbs and have replaced chips in my world.
So first way to go is with the flavored ones. I love salt and vinegar. These taste just like the potato chips. Sour cream and onion is really good too.
Second is with a dipping sauce. I like the Bitchin Sauce that you get at Whole Foods. I use the hot flavors for this one.
Last one is crumble them and coat things like chicken strips before you air fry them. Add some slaw with them and this is amazing!
