Welcome to the Diabetes Army Wellness Newsletter. The real deal from a former pro wrestler who lives with type 2 diabetes. In an effort to reverse my diabetes I am using exercise, intermittent fasting and a keto diet. These are my adventures.
Please remember, I am not a doctor so please check with your doctor before doing anything related to diabetes. This is what works for me.
Here you will see the results from my Dia Hacking myself. I am trying to see which foods have the smallest effect on insulin. The lower the better. Also keto and intermittent fasting.
The Diabetes Army Rebuild podcast is always under 10 minutes so perfect for the shower or while you are brushing your teeth! Diabetes Army Rebuild on all your favorite channels.
Finally, I pack a lot of info into this every week. Lot to read. I suggest you print it and enjoy it over a coffee or tea.
This week we talk about insulin sensitivity, Dexcom alarms, chili burgers and more!
Volume 2 Number 20
Well it has been a week and I am still obsessed with my Dexcom. It reads my glucose every five minutes. So I can literally see what is driving my glucose levels.
Why is this important? It makes it way easier to manage my diabetes. For example, I can see if my latest Starbucks creation will spike my glucose. If so, then either cut it out or make an adjustment.
The other part of that is with meals. I can watch my glucose after a meal and see if the combination worked for me or not. If not, I can swap ingredients out and put something in that won’t drive my glucose up.
On another note, I have been back in the gym fairly heavy lately. With that, I notice that my insulin sensitivity has made a huge adjustment.
With that said, I had a 140 reading at bedtime. To be careful I took a small amount of insulin to try and get a great reading for the moment.
At around 2 a.m. I was woken up with an alarm. My glucose had dropped down to 56. I had to take a number of glucose tablets to get the number up to 83 so I could go back to sleep.
In the past I wouldn’t have had this sort of reaction with the small amount that I took. I really believe this came from my work in the gym.
Last week I tried another fat fast. This time I did eggs and bacon. I did it for 42 hours and got some pretty interesting results.
I still had a hard time getting into ketosis but I lost six pounds in three days. I had gained a couple of pounds leading up to it and this blew them right back off.
Lately I have been combining different fasting protocols with my keto diet. The key is to keep changing it up so that my body doesn’t get used to any set regiment. I want it to be always guessing.
Now that we can get out to restaurants again, I headed to Ruth’s Chris on Saturday night. I stayed keto with the ordering. I had a chopped salad to start, petite filet and shrimp with grilled asparagus.
The point of this is that you can feel free to actually get out and have some fun. Just because you are eating keto, I am willing to bet that no matter where you go, you can find ways to make the menu work for you. Get creative and get it done!
Have some fun!
Hopefully you are taking my adventures and using them for your journey as well. My whole point of doing this was to present what I am doing and hopefully others will be able to take from that. I am not a doctor and I advise you check with your doc. I am just saying what works for me.
ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!
Besides being back in the gym, the other big move I made this week was to buy a new bed. There are a number of things that you have to take care of on your wellness journey and your sleep is one of them.
I don’t sleep a lot so it is important to me to make sure I am completely rested by the time I get up in the morning. So if there is one area of my life I am going to spend some money, it is here.
After shopping a number of different mattresses online, I finally headed into a couple of mattress shops. I wanted to get a feel for them. I also wanted to know how they would help the body of a former pro wrestler.
I have beaten my body up in rings all over the world. Now I need to take care of it.
In the end I went with Sleep Number. Yup, expensive but when I laid on it and they started adjusting the bed and I couldn’t believe how good it felt.
To be honest, if I hadn’t beaten my body up for so many years wrestling I probably wouldn’t have spent this much on a bed. So unless you have toured for years don’t think you have to drop a bunch of money.
So at the end of the day, I am happy to pay a little more for something that will help my performance. I am not saying to go buy one of these, however do get the best that you can afford. Pay your body back.
For those of you who don’t know, I wanted to prove this wasn’t a fluke so I started helping another ex pro wrestler with his journey. His name is Pete and he is located in Indiana. He lives in an assistance-living facility so it isn’t easy for him. Since then, a couple of other wrestlers and fighters have joined in. As always, consult with a doctor before doing any sort of health journey.
Besides Pete, I am also getting another former pro wrestler get going, his name is Joe and a successful real estate person who is on her own quest to get healthy.
This week, Pete remained down 103 pounds. He has gotten mixed up on the fasting schedule so moving forward I am going to have him write it down. He is doing well with it but if he gets off track a little then it will really screw with his Friday weigh in.
Pete’s steps are coming up but he needs to walk more. We are working on driving that number north. I am trying to get him more active during the daytime. I am hoping that when he can get back outside he will be able to get up to 5,000 steps.
Joe is another former pro wrestler whom I met out on tour. Joe is from the deep south so he comes with that southern mindset and had to retrain himself on eating.
Joe continues to maintain. What is cool is that he sent me a pic of himself and I could barely recognize him. He looks so much smaller than when we used to tour together. He says he feels great. He still wants to drop another 10 pounds.
Ms Real Estate had a great week. She lost everything that she had gained. That was great news.
On the other hand, she was getting tired of the food she was cooking. I suggested that she start getting out to local restaurants and start getting creative with ordering. I told her about McDonald’s alternatives and 5 Guys.
She got the point and was excited about it. We will keep marching forward.
So Ms. San Diego and I got together to celebrate her lower levels. She did have a couple of days where she jumped in with higher carbs but for the most part really kept them down and it paid off with a number of lower readings.
She is really changing her habits and it is showing in her glucose readings. They are now way more normal than they were in the past. She is continuing to keep them under control with carb counting.
Keto Meal Hacks
So keeping in the theme of staying creative and living a little, I headed to my friend’s bar. There I ordered the triple cheese and chili burger on a bed of lettuce.
When it arrived, I hammered it with hot sauce and picked all the beans out of the chili. It literally took me two minutes and I had a really creative dish. Add a simple house salad to it and you have a meal
Try it and enjoy!
If you know somebody who can benefit from this please share it. Have them DM my on Facebook or Instagram and I will be happy to add them. You rock!
